about

Over the summer I started sketching a work for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, two violins, viola, cello and bass. I was initially intending to include parts for celesta and harmonium because I had been really enjoying listening to Schoenberg’s ‘Three Pieces for Chamber Orchestra’.
Another reason why this work is essentially an homage to one to my favourite composer was that those initial sketches were based around the farben chord from the third of Schoenberg’s ‘Five Pieces for Orchestra’. I then went a little further, by using a twelve-note row based on the farben chord the work got still more Schoenbergian.
I wasn’t really intending to share these two short pieces but have decided to do so for two reasons.
I realised that ‘Sting Quartet #4’, which I posted earlier this month, was the thirteenth piece I had posted this year so wanted to post at least one more for luck before the end of the year! I had used these sketches to experiment with the beta release of musescore 4. This mix is the string sections from musesounds with the wind and brass from the free spitfire bbc symphony vst. Apart from a weird little swell in the basses I was well pleased with how they sounded so thought I would share, and bearing in mind Schoenberg’s anxiety about the number thirteen this homage seemed like the right piece to choose as this year’s fourteenth.
