about

I just recently upgraded my equipment and have been using the new edition of musescore to revise my pieces for string quartet using what I think you will agree are nicer more natural sounds. In the process of revisiting the pieces I realise I've settled on quite a traditional approach, usually four movements with a fast one, a slow one, a scherzo and then some sort of a rondo. The sextet and the fourth quartet really don't follow that pattern but even in the twelve tone pieces I seem quite traditional. Speaking of the twelve tone writing, the first quartet has two movements that use tone rows which I think of as abstractions of the two main ideas from the first movement, The 'Four Pieces' use a tone row that is a tribute to a departed friend and the sextet is based on a tone row I used in my second chamber symphony. The whole of the second quartet is based on a single row that plays around with major sevenths. Each movement of the third quartet inhabits it's own little sound world, the first, third and fourth movements are each based on tone rows and the second movement is in C minor.
Even though since then I've been experimenting with the crazy notion of writing tonal music I hope that there's enough going on in the folk songs, the quintet and the fourth and fifth quartets to get your ears into.

Hope you enjoy whatever takes your fancy :)

RobHolden Bradford, UK

During the 2020 lockdown I began scratching my musical itch using freeware I downloaded. It turned out to be the start of the most creative period of my musical life. My bandcamp page enables sharing work as I learn and develop but I also hope that performers might hear something that they would enjoy playing. If you would like to see any scores please get in touch,be great to hear from you. ... more
